Cotton Fabric Market Size in France
In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in the French cotton fabric market, when its value increased by 9.2% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, the total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. Exports from France
In 2021, exports of woven fabrics of cotton from France amounted to X tons, picking up by 14% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tunisia (X tons) was the main destination for cotton fabric exports from France, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton fabric exports to Tunisia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Morocco (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tunisia totaled -1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+2.7% per year) and Germany (-7.2% per year).
In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Morocco ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for cotton fabric exported from France worldwide, together accounting for 47% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Madagascar, Senegal, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Albania, which together accounted for a further 32%.
Albania, with a CAGR of +79.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cotton fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cotton Fabric Imports
Imports into France
In 2021, approx. X tons of woven fabrics of cotton were imported into France; growing by 12% compared with 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cotton fabric to France, with a 26% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton fabric imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +14.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+11.5% per year) and Italy (-2.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest cotton fabric suppliers to France were Italy ($X), Belgium ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Pakistan, China, Portugal, Germany, India and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
Among the main suppliers, Moldova, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cotton fabric import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
