Exports in GCC
In 2022, overseas shipments of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -4.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), making up a 7.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Oman (+67.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +67.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Oman (+7.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in GCC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +8.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+10.3%).
Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Imports in GCC
Anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports amounted to X tons in 2022, picking up by 4.8% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), constituting an 8.2% share of total imports. The following importers - Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Oman ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 91% share of total imports.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Bahrain ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
