Artichoke Market Size in GCC

After two years of decline, the GCC artichoke market increased by 4.6% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, posted a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Artichoke Production in GCC

In value terms, artichoke production reduced sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 752% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Oman (X tons) remains the largest artichoke producing country in GCC, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

In 2022, artichoke exports in GCC dropped rapidly to X tons, waning by -39.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 365% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 287%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major exporter of artichokes in GCC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), committing a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +31.0%).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest artichoke supplier in GCC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +7.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (-13.1%).

Artichoke Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of artichokes were imported in GCC; flattening at 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 209%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, artichoke imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 284% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of artichoke imports in 2022 were Kuwait (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together finishing at 89% of total import. It was distantly followed by Qatar (X tons), making up a 7.6% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +18.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +22.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -2.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, artichoke import price decreased by -10.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 58%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
