The GCC artificial and colloidal graphite market fell to $X in 2021, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 57%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations increased by 67% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 292%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 166%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key exporter of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in GCC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2021. Kuwait (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (9%) and Bahrain (7.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to artificial and colloidal graphite exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +38.8%. At the same time, Kuwait (+121.3%), Bahrain (+35.6%) and Saudi Arabia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +121.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain increased by +27, +23 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier in GCC, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 13% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, artificial and colloidal graphite exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bahrain (+37.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+5.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC

Artificial and colloidal graphite imports rose sharply to X tons in 2021, surging by 13% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2021. Bahrain (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +13.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Bahrain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total imports. Oman, Kuwait and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -39.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
