Asparagus Market Size in GCC
The GCC asparagus market rose slightly to $X in 2022, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Asparagus Production in GCC
In value terms, asparagus production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Saudi Arabia (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in GCC, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.
In Saudi Arabia, asparagus production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Exports in GCC
In 2022, exports of asparagus in GCC shrank notably to X tons, waning by -44.5% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 770%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, asparagus exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 1,215% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major exporter of asparagus, generating 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +10.5%. At the same time, Bahrain (+72.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain increased by +24 and +11 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in GCC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asparagus export price increased by +45.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 51% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Bahrain totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.5%).
Asparagus Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2022, approx. X tons of asparagus were imported in GCC; reducing by -8.8% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, asparagus imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major importer of asparagus, comprising 67% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took near 26% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) and Oman (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Qatar (+62.0%), Oman (+37.5%), Bahrain (+6.1%) and Kuwait (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +62.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Qatar (+17 p.p.) and Oman (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-4.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in GCC, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +7.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+66.8% per year) and Kuwait (+10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asparagus import price decreased by -2.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
