In 2021, the GCC automotive lighting market decreased by -4.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Automotive Lighting Production in GCC

In value terms, automotive lighting production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in GCC

In 2021, approx. X units of automotive lighting were exported in GCC; with an increase of 11% against 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, automotive lighting exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 63%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 71% of total exports. Oman (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bahrain (X units). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+45.4%) and Bahrain (+23.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +45.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Oman and Bahrain increased by +22 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest automotive lighting supplier in GCC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, automotive lighting exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+52.6% per year) and Bahrain (+20.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 83%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Oman ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Automotive Lighting Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2021, approx. X units of automotive lighting were imported in GCC; picking up by 41% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, automotive lighting imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 90% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Bahrain (X units), Kuwait (X units), Qatar (X units) and Oman (X units) - together made up 9.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to automotive lighting imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Qatar (+10.6%) and Bahrain (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Oman (-2.9%) and Kuwait (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bahrain and Qatar increased by +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported automotive lighting in GCC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+3.5% per year) and Qatar (+5.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 50%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, leveling off in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per unit), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
