After seven years of growth, the GCC blueberry and cranberry market decreased by -9.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate significant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of blueberry and cranberry production was the United Arab Emirates (X tons), comprising approx. 64% of total volume. Moreover, blueberry and cranberry production in the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold.

In the United Arab Emirates, blueberry and cranberry production contracted by an average annual rate of -8.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Saudi Arabia (+1.8% per year) and Oman (+1,249.2% per year).

Exports in GCC

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of blueberries and cranberries decreased by -43.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 107%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 201% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Oman was the major exporter of blueberries and cranberries in GCC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), generating a 42% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +67.5%).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in GCC, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to -2.0%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 109%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+24.8%).

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of blueberries and cranberries were imported in GCC; falling by -9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 82%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest importer of blueberries and cranberries in GCC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blueberries and cranberries imports, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+23.0%) and Kuwait (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Qatar (-2.1%) and Saudi Arabia (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+24 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+21 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kuwait (-3 p.p.) and Qatar (-41.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported blueberries and cranberries in GCC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +25.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-0.6% per year) and Qatar (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blueberry and cranberry import price increased by +27.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
