Bottled Water Market Size in GCC

The GCC bottled water market contracted to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Bottled Water Production in GCC

In value terms, bottled water production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Bottled Water Exports

Exports in GCC

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of bottled waters, when their volume increased by 2.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the key exporter of bottled waters, constituting 62% of total exports. Oman (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (6.8%) and Bahrain (6%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bottled water exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+19.7%) and Oman (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bahrain (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Oman (+11 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Bahrain saw its share reduced by -6.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in GCC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at -2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+7.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+17.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Bottled Water Imports

Imports in GCC

Bottled water imports contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the largest importer of bottled waters, making up 43% of total imports. Oman (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (12%), Kuwait (10%), Bahrain (6.1%) and Qatar (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bottled waters in GCC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +8.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+7.9% per year) and Kuwait (+5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
