In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the GCC buckwheat market, when its value increased by 71% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption showed a significant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Buckwheat Production in GCC
In value terms, buckwheat production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 373%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) remains the largest buckwheat producing country in GCC, accounting for 96% of total volume. Moreover, buckwheat production in the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in the United Arab Emirates stood at +24.7%.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of buckwheat decreased by -28.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 13,647% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, buckwheat exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 10,406%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 99.9% of total exports in 2022.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the buckwheat exports, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest buckwheat supplier in GCC.
In the United Arab Emirates, buckwheat exports increased at an average annual rate of +53.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 147%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

Imports in GCC
In 2022, purchases abroad of buckwheat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 155% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, buckwheat imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 54% of total imports. Oman (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Qatar (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+18.8%), Bahrain (+12.1%) and Kuwait (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Qatar (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Oman (+15 p.p.), Qatar (+6.2 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kuwait (-3.6 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported buckwheat in GCC, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +7.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (+31.4% per year) and Bahrain (+18.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 72%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
