Cabbage Market Size in GCC

The GCC cabbage market declined to $X in 2022, which is down by -10.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cabbage Production in GCC

In value terms, cabbage production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together accounting for 86% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cabbage yield in GCC stood at X tons per ha, surging by 7% on 2021. The yield indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage yield decreased by -6.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the cabbage yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the cabbage harvested area in GCC contracted to X ha, with a decrease of -4.7% compared with the year before. The total harvested area indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage harvested area increased by +5.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 47%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of cabbage and other brassicas were exported in GCC; falling by -89.5% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports saw a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), committing a 32% share of total exports. Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in GCC, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 4.2% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, cabbage exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (-16.7% per year) and Bahrain (+40.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 163% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by -37.4% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 118% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Qatar represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 54% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (12%), Bahrain (9.1%) and Kuwait (8.6%). Oman (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage imports into Qatar stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+17.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bahrain (-1.9%), the United Arab Emirates (-16.1%), Kuwait (-16.8%) and Oman (-21.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain increased by +37, +11 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest cabbage importing markets in GCC were Qatar ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
