The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +89.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports in GCC
For the third year in a row, GCC recorded decline in overseas shipments of calcium carbonate, which decreased by -24% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcium carbonate exports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented the main exporters of calcium carbonate in GCC, together mixing up 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), committing a 20% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest calcium carbonate supplying countries in GCC were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Oman ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Calcium Carbonate Imports
Imports in GCC
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of calcium carbonate decreased by -10.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 38%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -26.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. Qatar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.7% share, followed by Oman (7.1%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of calcium carbonate. At the same time, Qatar (+14.6%) and Oman (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2021. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-8.9%) and Bahrain (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Qatar (+6.8 p.p.) and Oman (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcium carbonate in GCC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia amounted to +4.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+12.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
