Exports in GCC

In 2021, approx. X tons of candles and tapers were exported in GCC; growing by 64% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 122%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candles and tapers exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 255%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the major exporter of candles and tapers, creating 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), comprising a 24% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to candles and tapers exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Oman (+60.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +60.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Oman (+24 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -20% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest candles and tapers supplier in GCC, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +15.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+72.7% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-3.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 121%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+20.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Candles And Tapers Imports

Imports in GCC

For the third year in a row, GCC recorded growth in purchases abroad of candles and tapers, which increased by 30% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, candles and tapers imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together mixing up 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), generating a 9.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +22.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
