In 2021, overseas purchases of carob decreased by -75.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carob imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 209%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Qatar (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 85% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), comprising an 11% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Qatar (with a CAGR of +106.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest carob importing markets in GCC were Qatar ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 97% share of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 52%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
