The GCC cement market contracted remarkably to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -41% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Cement Production in GCC
In value terms, cement production reduced markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Cement Exports
Exports in GCC
After six years of decline, shipments abroad of cement increased by 6.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 73%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cement exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the largest exporter of cement in GCC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total exports.
Exports from the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+3.5%) and Oman (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012-2022. Saudi Arabia (+8.3 p.p.) and Oman (+7.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -15.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest cement supplier in GCC, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
In the United Arab Emirates, cement exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+1.2% per year) and Oman (+1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cement Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2022, the amount of cement imported in GCC fell to X tons, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cement imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented the major importers of cement in 2022, recording near 37% and 34% of total imports, respectively. Bahrain (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Qatar (5.7%). Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +7.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest cement importing markets in GCC were Kuwait ($X), Oman ($X) and Bahrain ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of -2.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
