Chick Peas Market Size in GCC
After two years of growth, the GCC chick peas market decreased by -11.9% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +25.6% against 2019 indices. After four years of decline, shipments abroad of chick peas increased by 0.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chick peas exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012 to 2022. Saudi Arabia (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates increased by +7.1 percentage points.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest chick peas supplier in GCC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+3.1%).
Chick Peas Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2022, approx. X tons of chick peas were imported in GCC; which is down by -9.2% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chick peas imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 58% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+11.9%), Bahrain (+7.6%), Qatar (+4.8%), Kuwait (+3.0%) and Saudi Arabia (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman increased by +2.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest chick peas importing markets in GCC were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Oman ($X), together comprising 86% of total imports. Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Among the main importing countries, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 30%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
