In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, when their volume decreased by -14.8% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 56%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, coffee extract exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main exporter of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, generating 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), achieving a 19% share of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports, with a CAGR of +35.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+26.4%) and Saudi Arabia (+12.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates increased by +37 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest coffee extract supplier in GCC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
In the United Arab Emirates, coffee extract exports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+7.9% per year) and Kuwait (+19.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC
In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were imported in GCC; shrinking by -4.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coffee extract imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together generating a 21% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +17.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
