Construction Sands Market Size in GCC

The GCC construction sands market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a resilient expansion. In 2022, construction sands exports in GCC soared to X tons, rising by 142% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 414% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of construction sands, namely the United Arab Emirates, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the construction sands exports, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+39 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest construction sands supplier in GCC.

In the United Arab Emirates, construction sands exports increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -37.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 91%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United Arab Emirates amounted to -11.6% per year.

Imports in GCC

Construction sands imports soared to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 60% on 2021. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Bahrain (X tons) was the main importer of construction sands, comprising 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Bahrain increased at an average annual rate of +15.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bahrain (+52 p.p.) and Oman (+7.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Bahrain ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported construction sands in GCC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

In Bahrain, construction sands imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+2.0% per year) and Oman (+6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -21.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
