Cotton Lint Market Size in GCC

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the GCC cotton lint market, when its value decreased by -9.6% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cotton lint was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 195%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton lint exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 245% against the previous year. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 99.9% of total exports in 2022.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cotton lint exports, with a CAGR of -27.7% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest cotton lint supplier in GCC.

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cotton lint, when their volume decreased by -21.2% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 371% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton lint imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 306% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Oman (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), making up a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +63.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Oman ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Bahrain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +74.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
