Eggplant Market Size in GCC

In 2022, the GCC eggplant market decreased by -3.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Eggplant Production in GCC

In value terms, eggplant production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 36%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of eggplant production, comprising approx. 53% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Oman (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kuwait (X tons), with a 17% share.

In Saudi Arabia, eggplant production increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Oman (+17.6% per year) and Kuwait (+1.1% per year).

The average eggplant yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the year before. The yield indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant yield decreased by -19.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the eggplant yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of eggplants (aubergines) were harvested in GCC; approximately equating the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the eggplant harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Eggplant Exports

Exports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of eggplants (aubergines) were exported in GCC; dropping by -7.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), committing an 8.4% share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the eggplants (aubergines) exports, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in GCC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia totaled +4.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 37%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+2.2%).

Eggplant Imports

Imports in GCC

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -14.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 86%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, eggplant imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 113%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Qatar (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) represented roughly 70% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Bahrain (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +46.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest eggplant importing markets in GCC were Kuwait ($X), Qatar ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +36.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
