Exports in GCC
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of ferro-silicon decreased by -50% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 194%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ferro-silicon exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 200%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Kuwait (X tons) was the key exporter of ferro-silicon, mixing up 75% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (7%) and Bahrain (4.7%).
Exports from Kuwait increased at an average annual rate of +30.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+42.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +42.2% from 2012-2022. Oman experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain increased by +75, +5.5 and +4.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest ferro-silicon supplying countries in GCC were Kuwait ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Oman ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports. Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 11%.
Among the main exporting countries, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +35.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Ferro-Silicon Imports
Imports in GCC
Ferro-silicon imports reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, waning by -17.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 107%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ferro-silicon imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 39% of total imports. Oman (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (17%), Qatar (13%) and Bahrain (9.1%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ferro-silicon importing markets in GCC were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Oman ($X) and Qatar ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +29.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
