Imports in GCC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal increased by 3.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 237%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, meat meals and pellets imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 240% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Oman was the largest importer of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal in GCC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2021. Kuwait (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (19%) and Bahrain (15%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to meat meals and pellets imports into Oman stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Bahrain (+21.4%) and Kuwait (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +21.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-28.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Oman (+33 p.p.), Kuwait (+19 p.p.) and Bahrain (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -67% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Oman ($X), Kuwait ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Bahrain, which accounted for a further 19%.
Bahrain, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 72%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
