Garlic Market Size in GCC

The GCC garlic market rose to $X in 2022, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Garlic Production in GCC

In value terms, garlic production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Oman (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of garlic production, comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, garlic production in Oman exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kuwait (X tons), tenfold.

In Oman, garlic production expanded at an average annual rate of +21.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average garlic yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 3.2% on 2021 figures. Overall, the yield saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the garlic yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of garlic production in GCC rose to X ha, growing by 4% against 2021. The total harvested area indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic harvested area decreased by -4.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 100% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Garlic Exports

Exports in GCC

Garlic exports dropped markedly to X tons in 2022, declining by -79.2% compared with the year before. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 198% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -17.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports. Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -10.1%. Kuwait (-7.2%) and Bahrain (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+14 p.p.) and Kuwait (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest garlic supplier in GCC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, garlic exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (-2.8% per year) and Bahrain (-2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 355% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a significant expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were imported in GCC; with an increase of 6% against the year before. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 75% of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons) and Qatar (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Oman ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 83% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +14.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price increased by +34.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Oman ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Qatar ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
