Exports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of ginger were exported in GCC; with a decrease of -66.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 95%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 106%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main exporter of ginger, committing 59% of total exports. Oman (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 34% share, followed by Kuwait (5.3%). Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +51.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier in GCC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+43.7% per year) and Bahrain (+4.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ginger Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, imports of ginger in GCC fell to X tons, approximately mirroring the year before. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key importer of ginger in GCC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together making up a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Oman (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 8.8% of total imports.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -18.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
