Grape Market Size in GCC
The GCC grape market dropped markedly to $X in 2022, which is down by -16% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Grape Production in GCC
In value terms, grape production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 353% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Saudi Arabia (X tons) remains the largest grape producing country in GCC, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Saudi Arabia amounted to -2.6%.
The average grape yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 243%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the grape harvested area in GCC reduced to X ha, waning by -2.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 4.5% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Grape Exports
Exports in GCC
In 2022, approx. X tons of grapes were exported in GCC; waning by -13.7% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 191%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grape exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 188%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main exporter of grapes, making up 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), comprising a 33% share of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +25.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in GCC, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.
In the United Arab Emirates, grape exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+22.7% per year) and Kuwait (+29.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grape export price decreased by +0.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 52%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Grape Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2022, the amount of grapes imported in GCC shrank rapidly to X tons, falling by -27.4% on 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, grape imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 47% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Qatar (X tons). All these countries together held near 50% share of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Oman ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Qatar, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 43% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
