Hazelnut Market Size in GCC

The GCC hazelnut market surged to $X in 2021, increasing by 309% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Hazelnut Production in GCC

In value terms, hazelnut production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 269%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

Hazelnut Exports

Exports in GCC

In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were exported in GCC; dropping by -45.4% on the previous year. In general, exports saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 128%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hazelnut exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), together creating a 28% share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012-2021. Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+16 p.p.), Oman (+7.1 p.p.) and Bahrain (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in GCC, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, hazelnut exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (-2.0% per year) and Bahrain (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -13.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.8%).

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2021, hazelnut imports in GCC skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 468% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2021. Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts imports, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Qatar (+15.1%) and Oman (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+79 p.p.) and Qatar (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in GCC, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports.

In the United Arab Emirates, hazelnut imports increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Oman (+27.2% per year) and Qatar (+16.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -51.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 67%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
