After two years of decline, shipments abroad of iodine, fluorine and bromine increased by 68% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 143%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 490% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the largest exporters of iodine, fluorine and bromine, together generating 100% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +19.9%).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest iodine, fluorine and bromine supplier in GCC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +31.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -41.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 143% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+9.4%).

Imports of Iodine, Fluorine And Bromine

Imports in GCC

In 2021, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports in GCC reduced dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -19% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 525% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.

Saudi Arabia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iodine, fluorine and bromine imports, with a CAGR of +65.3% from 2012 to 2021. The United Arab Emirates (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+88 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-36.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iodine, fluorine and bromine in GCC, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

In Saudi Arabia, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports increased at an average annual rate of +30.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -25.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep setback.
