Exports in GCC
In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were exported in GCC; falling by -10.1% on 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 64%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, knife and scissors exports reached $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -0.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 66%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.2% share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the knives, scissors and blades exports, with a CAGR of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahrain (+5.8%) and Saudi Arabia (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates increased by +2.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest knife and scissors supplier in GCC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +5.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+11.5% per year) and Bahrain (+7.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC
In 2021, the amount of knives, scissors and blades imported in GCC expanded rapidly to X tons, picking up by 11% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, knife and scissors imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +53.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the major importer of knives, scissors and blades, creating 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together committing a 29% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Qatar (-1.8%), Bahrain (-3.2%) and Saudi Arabia (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Oman increased by +2.8 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported knives, scissors and blades in GCC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +4.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-4.1% per year) and Kuwait (+6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
