In 2022, the GCC leek market decreased by -27.3% to $X, falling for the seventh consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, consumption saw a abrupt slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Leek Production in GCC
In value terms, leek production reduced remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 269% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Saudi Arabia (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in GCC, accounting for 97% of total volume. It was followed by Oman (X tons), with a 2.6% share of total production.
In Saudi Arabia, leek production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022.
Leek Exports
Exports in GCC
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, when their volume decreased by -13.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 771%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leek exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 453% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Oman (X tons) was the main exporter of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, comprising 66% of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (7.7%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Oman was also the fastest-growing in terms of the leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 135%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -4.4% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 6,319% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leek imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 5,851%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Qatar (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the largest importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, together generating 94% of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest leek importing markets in GCC were Qatar ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 92% of total imports.
