The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), with a combined 98% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory yield in GCC contracted to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -8.1% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 64%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lettuce and chicory production in GCC amounted to X ha, increasing by 4.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in GCC
In 2022, shipments abroad of lettuce and chicory decreased by -22.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 111%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together generating 94% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), mixing up a 4.6% share of total exports.

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in GCC
In 2022, lettuce and chicory imports in GCC reduced slightly to X tons, waning by -3.3% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 44% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (14%), the United Arab Emirates (13%), Oman (8.2%) and Bahrain (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory imports into Saudi Arabia stood at +8.0%. At the same time, Oman (+24.1%), Qatar (+8.4%) and Bahrain (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.2%) and Kuwait (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+17 p.p.), Oman (+7 p.p.) and Qatar (+6.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-13.5 p.p.) and Kuwait (-18.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory importing markets in GCC were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), together comprising 82% of total imports. Qatar, Bahrain and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Oman, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
