Linseed Market Size in GCC

After two years of growth, the GCC linseed market decreased by -14.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption saw a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Linseed Production in GCC

In value terms, linseed production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 18%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of linseed production, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In 2022, overseas shipments of linseed increased by 9.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, linseed exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 417%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The biggest shipments were from the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together reaching 100% of total export.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the linseed exports, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest linseed supplier in GCC.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

Linseed Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of linseed were imported in GCC; picking up by 4% compared with the previous year. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, linseed imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+49.0%), Kuwait (+19.6%) and Bahrain (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +49.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kuwait (+7.8 p.p.) and Oman (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Bahrain (-2.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported linseed in GCC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +12.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kuwait (+17.6% per year) and Oman (+47.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed import price increased by +62.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
