Exports in GCC
In 2021, overseas shipments of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water decreased by -9.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, liquid air and distilled water exports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 127%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.
Exports by Country
Oman was the main exporter of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water in GCC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), comprising a 29% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Oman was also the fastest-growing in terms of the liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water exports, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+9.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Oman (+48 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-16.3 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (-26.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest liquid air and distilled water supplying countries in GCC were Oman ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports.
Oman, with a CAGR of +49.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 82%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Liquid Or Compressed Air And Distilled Or Conductivity Water
Imports in GCC
In 2021, approx. X tons of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water were imported in GCC; dropping by -9.3% against the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 166%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, liquid air and distilled water imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 129%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the largest importer of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water in GCC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Oman (X tons) took a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Qatar (8.7%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +17.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water in GCC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 14% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, liquid air and distilled water imports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (-35.7% per year) and Oman (+12.9% per year).
