Exports in GCC
In 2021, shipments abroad of luggage and handbags increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 51%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, luggage exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), mixing up a 9.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - each recorded an 8% share of total exports.
Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+17.5%) and Oman (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kuwait (+7.1 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.1 p.p.) and Oman (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -13.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest luggage supplier in GCC, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 6.2% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, luggage exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+15.9% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-5.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage export price decreased by -19.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Luggage Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2021, imports of luggage and handbags in GCC surged to X tons, picking up by 25% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, luggage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together making up 81% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (6.3%). The following importers - Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported luggage and handbags in GCC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-0.3% per year) and Kuwait (+11.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
