The GCC mineral or aerated water market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. For the fourth year in a row, GCC recorded decline in shipments abroad of mineral or aerated waters, which decreased by -1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major exporter of mineral or aerated waters in GCC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), together generating a 34% share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+21.8%) and Oman (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bahrain (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates increased by +7.2, +6.2 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest mineral or aerated water supplier in GCC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 9.2% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, mineral or aerated water exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+6.2% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+23.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Mineral or Aerated Waters

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of mineral or aerated waters were imported in GCC; with a decrease of -5% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) were the major importers of mineral or aerated waters, together mixing up 96% of total imports. Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mineral or aerated waters in GCC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 12% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, mineral or aerated water imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+9.4% per year) and Kuwait (+5.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mineral or aerated water import price decreased by -3.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
