The GCC mushroom and truffle market shrank to $X in 2022, which is down by -4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.4% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together making up 92% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), generating a 5.4% share of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the largest mushroom and truffle supplier in GCC, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Oman totaled -11.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+3.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 30%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mushroom And Truffle Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, the amount of mushrooms and truffles imported in GCC contracted dramatically to X tons, dropping by -39% against 2021. Overall, imports recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 57%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kuwait (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importers of mushrooms and truffles in 2022, resulting at near 34% and 31% of total imports, respectively. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bahrain (11%) and Qatar (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +7.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
