Dried Mushroom Market Size in GCC

The GCC dried mushroom market totaled $X in 2022, rising by 4.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried mushroom production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 158% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of dried mushrooms and truffles was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dried mushroom exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major exporter of dried mushrooms and truffles in GCC, generating 99% of total export.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried mushrooms and truffles exports, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+66 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest dried mushroom supplier in GCC.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +9.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -62.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United Arab Emirates amounted to -9.9% per year.

Dried Mushroom Imports

Imports in GCC

For the third consecutive year, GCC recorded decline in overseas purchases of dried mushrooms and truffles, which decreased by -0.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 191%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the key importer of dried mushrooms and truffles, achieving 50% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bahrain (14%) and Kuwait (6.7%). Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Saudi Arabia decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+11.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.4%) and Oman (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Qatar (-1.2%) and Kuwait (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+13 p.p.) and Bahrain (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Saudi Arabia (-6 p.p.) and Kuwait (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried mushrooms and truffles in GCC, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +8.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-4.2% per year) and Kuwait (-7.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -11.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 100%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+27.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
