For the fifth consecutive year, GCC recorded growth in overseas purchases of needles, catheters, cannulae, which increased by 11% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. Among the main importing countries, Kuwait, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per unit), while Qatar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
