Imports in GCC
For the tenth year in a row, GCC recorded decline in supplies from abroad of newsprint, which decreased by -50% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a significant decrease. The smallest decline of -9.4% was in 2018. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, newsprint imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a sharp downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 8.1%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 67% of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Bahrain (11%) and Oman (6.7%).
Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -14.5% from 2012 to 2022. Bahrain (-9.9%), Oman (-15.5%) and Kuwait (-23.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+44 p.p.), Bahrain (+8.4 p.p.) and Oman (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported newsprint in GCC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 9.1% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, newsprint imports contracted by an average annual rate of -16.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (-22.5% per year) and Oman (-15.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
