In 2021, shipments abroad of non-wheat flours decreased by -47.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 219% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major exporter of non-wheat flours in GCC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. Oman (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (7.1%). Kuwait (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -10.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+7.9%) and Saudi Arabia (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +7.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Oman (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait increased by +5.5 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in GCC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 5.5% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, non-wheat flour exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+4.4% per year) and Oman (-11.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 33% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat flour export price increased by +35.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC

Non-wheat flour imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 32% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major importer of non-wheat flours in GCC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2021. Oman (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Qatar (13%) and Kuwait (10%). Bahrain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of non-wheat flours. At the same time, Qatar (+12.4%), Kuwait (+7.7%) and Bahrain (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2021. Oman experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Qatar and Kuwait increased by +8.6 and +5.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Oman ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Qatar and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Kuwait ($X per ton) and Bahrain ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Oman ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
