Exports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of orthopaedic appliances and splints were exported in GCC; increasing by 27% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orthopaedic appliances exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 720% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Bahrain (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+49.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates (+68 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest orthopaedic appliances supplier in GCC, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +16.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -17.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 219%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Bahrain totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.3%).

Orthopaedic Appliances Imports

Imports in GCC

Orthopaedic appliances imports reduced to X tons in 2022, which is down by -8.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 46%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orthopaedic appliances imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +23.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the key importer of orthopaedic appliances and splints in GCC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to orthopaedic appliances imports into Saudi Arabia stood at -5.8%. At the same time, Qatar (+9.9%), Kuwait (+7.7%), Bahrain (+6.9%), Oman (+6.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain increased by +9.3, +5.9, +4.5, +3.1 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 91% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.6%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 89%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
