Paddy Rice Market Size in GCC
In 2021, the GCC paddy rice market decreased by -36.5% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Paddy Rice Production in GCC
In value terms, paddy rice production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 54%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Oman (X tons) remains the largest paddy rice producing country in GCC, accounting for 100% of total volume.

Exports in GCC
In 2021, paddy rice exports in GCC surged to X tons, growing by 204% on the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 56% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons). All these countries together held near 43% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest paddy rice supplier in GCC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-7.2% per year) and Oman (-3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 66%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Paddy Rice Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of paddy rice decreased by -26.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the major importer of paddy rice in GCC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), committing a 24% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paddy rice imports, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+65 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-54.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paddy rice importing markets in GCC were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Oman ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +6.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -32% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
