Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -13.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 34%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -8.2% against 2019 indices. The United Arab Emirates represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 66% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. Bahrain (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper dishes and cups exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +6.6%. At the same time, Bahrain (+29.5%), Kuwait (+27.0%) and Saudi Arabia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2021. Kuwait (+8.9 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -3% and -9.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest paper dishes and cups supplier in GCC, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +6.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+3.8% per year) and Kuwait (+24.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC

In 2021, paper dishes and cups imports in GCC soared to X tons, with an increase of 26% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the key importers of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in GCC, together making up 69% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (9.1%) and Oman (4.9%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
