Green Peas Market Size in GCC

The GCC green peas market reached $X in 2022, with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green peas production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 642% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of green peas production, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

Exports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X tons of peas (green) were exported in GCC; growing by 9.2% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green peas exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 103%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green peas exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -5.9%. At the same time, Kuwait (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+3.2 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in GCC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to -3.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+4.9% per year) and Oman (-8.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -50% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 138% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Green Peas Imports

Imports in GCC

Green peas imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2022, picking up by 2.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 88%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green peas imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -34.7% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2022. Qatar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 5.4% share, followed by Oman (4.9%). The following importers - Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - each reached a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green peas imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Kuwait (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +16.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-5.4%), Qatar (-11.9%) and Bahrain (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.) and Kuwait (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Qatar (-6.3 p.p.) and Bahrain (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (green) in GCC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 9.2% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, green peas imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+3.1% per year) and Bahrain (-2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green peas import price increased by +4.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
