Exports in GCC
In 2022, shipments abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -63.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 327%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 190%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 72% of total exports. Oman (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (5%). The following exporters - Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pimenta pepper exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +9.2%. At the same time, Oman (+52.8%), Bahrain (+48.8%) and Saudi Arabia (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +52.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman and Bahrain increased by +18 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest pimenta pepper supplier in GCC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +16.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+60.4% per year) and Bahrain (+47.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 58%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pimenta Pepper Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2022, supplies from abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -40.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the main importer of pimenta pepper, generating 67% of total imports. Qatar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pimenta pepper. At the same time, Bahrain (+7.3%) and Qatar (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-2.6%) and Oman (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain increased by +8, +6.3 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pimenta pepper in GCC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +8.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+13.3% per year) and Oman (+2.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +74.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
