In 2022, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports in GCC plummeted to X tons, dropping by -26% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports dropped to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the largest exporter of plastic tableware and kitchenware in GCC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons), together comprising a 39% share of total exports. Bahrain (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Kuwait (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2022. In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware supplier in GCC, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +10.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-5.1% per year) and Kuwait (+9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 17% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic tableware and kitchenware export price increased by +87.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Bahrain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC

Plastic tableware and kitchenware imports contracted to X tons in 2022, waning by -8% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main importer of plastic tableware and kitchenware, constituting 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons), together achieving a 55% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware importing markets in GCC were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports. Oman, Bahrain and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Bahrain, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
