The GCC preserved swine meat market expanded notably to $X in 2021, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. For the fourth year in a row, GCC recorded decline in shipments abroad of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat, which decreased by -24.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 394% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved swine meat exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 314% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Bahrain (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the major exporters of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat in GCC, together reaching approx. 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +26.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 108%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat imported in GCC skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 22% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +102.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved swine meat imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at -1.7%. At the same time, Qatar (+21.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bahrain (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Qatar (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -19.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat in GCC, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.

In the United Arab Emirates, preserved swine meat imports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+29.8% per year) and Bahrain (-4.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
