Exports in GCC

In 2021, exports of pyrethrum and peppermint in GCC skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 20% on 2020. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 123%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the largest exporter of pyrethrum and peppermint in GCC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), creating a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bahrain (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahrain (+55.0%), Kuwait (+40.1%), Oman (+29.7%) and Saudi Arabia (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Bahrain (+3.2 p.p.), Oman (+2.2 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-8.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier in GCC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 5.5% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, pyrethrum and peppermint exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+12.7% per year) and Oman (+40.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pyrethrum And Peppermint Imports

Imports in GCC

For the third consecutive year, GCC recorded growth in purchases abroad of pyrethrum and peppermint, which increased by 5.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major importer of pyrethrum and peppermint in GCC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Kuwait (12%), Qatar (7.1%) and Bahrain (4.9%). Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Qatar (+38.2%), Oman (+27.9%), Kuwait (+22.7%) and Bahrain (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +38.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+15 p.p.), Kuwait (+8 p.p.), Qatar (+6.3 p.p.), Oman (+2.6 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-34.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest pyrethrum and peppermint importing markets in GCC were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 86% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +28.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pyrethrum and peppermint import price decreased by -24.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
