In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the GCC cattle hide and skin market, when its value decreased by -64.1% to $X. In general, consumption faced a deep setback. Production of Raw Hides And Skins of Cattle in GCC

In Saudi Arabia, cattle hide and skin production contracted by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+0.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.2% per year).
In 2021, the average yield of raw hides and skins of cattle in GCC contracted slightly to X kg per head, reducing by -2.6% against 2020. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cattle hide and skin yield reached the peak level at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure.
In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in GCC totaled X heads, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the number of producing animals increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the amount of producing animals reached the peak level of X heads. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of this number remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle, when their volume increased by 154% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the major exporter of raw hides and skins of cattle, committing 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together generating a 32% share of total exports.
Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of cattle exports, with a CAGR of +78.1% from 2012 to 2021. In terms of the main exporting countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +77.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in GCC
In 2021, cattle hide and skin imports in GCC skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 98% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 238%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 153% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of raw hides and skins of cattle. Saudi Arabia (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+3.1 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in GCC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.
