Exports in GCC

In 2021, shipments abroad of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment) decreased by -11.2% to X units, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 78% of total exports. Oman (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (5.6%) and Kuwait (4.9%).

Exports from the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -11.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Oman (+36.4%) and Kuwait (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +36.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Oman and Kuwait increased by +11 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest commercial refrigeration equipment supplier in GCC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at -5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+42.7% per year) and Kuwait (+6.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while Saudi Arabia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in GCC

Commercial refrigeration equipment imports surged to X units in 2021, jumping by 45% compared with 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, commercial refrigeration equipment imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed slight growth. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X units) was the major importer of refrigerating and freezing equipment and heat pumps (except household type equipment), creating 48% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Oman (9.9%), Kuwait (9.5%) and Bahrain (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 80% of total imports. These countries were followed by Oman and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 11%.

Bahrain, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per unit in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per unit), while Oman ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
