Exports in GCC

In 2021, shipments abroad of rice increased by 79% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed perceptible growth. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rice exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted noticeable growth. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. Oman (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rice exports, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. Oman (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Oman (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest rice supplier in GCC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, rice exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Oman amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.8%).

Rice Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of rice decreased by -17.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rice imports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 76% of total imports. Oman (X tons) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (7.8%) and Qatar (6%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of -0.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rice in GCC, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Saudi Arabia was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.9% per year) and Oman (+1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Oman ($X per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Qatar ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
