Sour Cherry Market Size in GCC

The GCC sour cherry market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a remarkable increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sour cherry production declined significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 6,002,233%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of sour cherry production was Saudi Arabia (X tons), accounting for 99% of total volume.

Exports in GCC

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of sour cherries, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 2,967%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sour cherry exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 3,026% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the largest exporters of sour cherries in GCC, together comprising 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), comprising a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +44.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest sour cherry supplier in GCC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to -4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+63.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -32.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 90% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Sour Cherry Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, purchases abroad of sour cherries decreased by -5.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 165%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sour cherry imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of sour cherries, namely Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), constituting a 6.2% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Kuwait (with a CAGR of +36.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Qatar ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sour cherries in GCC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahrain, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Qatar totaled +35.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+35.2% per year) and Bahrain (+0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 131% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
